Commerce is the lifeblood of the economy yet few businesses understand their full economic impacts, particularly in regard to the “free” sustainability services provided by society and the environment. Governments have responded to society’s demands that businesses be accountable for their sustainability impacts with legislation setting up markets to price environmental services such as greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water. The New Zealand Government intends to pass legislation, before the election, for an emissions trading scheme. There is speculation that sustainability policies could be an election issue.
